Hop Pellets
Hop Pellets
are hops that have been ground and formed into pellets to make them
easier to store, and stabilise the material to help prevent deterioration
of the hops' volatile oils and acids. Hop pellets are best stored
vacumn sealed at below 3 degrees in the fridge for short term or
the freezer for longer term storage.
Hop pellets are available from us in 100gram vacumn sealed bags.
Our hops are stored vacumn sealed at 3 degrees celcius or less at
all times.

Whole Hop
Flowers
Whole flowers
are pressed into bales after harvest, and represent the least processed
form of hops available. Some brewers believe they can impart a smoother
more balanced flavour to a beer, particularly noble hop varieties.
To protect the Australian hop industry from pests and diseases that
affect hops plantations in Europe and North America, it is not possible
to import whole flower hops into Australia from anywhere else other
than NZ without an AQIS (Australian Quarantine & Inspection
Service) permit and strict quarantine control.

There are
a number of famous varieties of hops available from NZ, including
some that are better known for being grown in the UK or US. Because
they are grown in a different environment, they can be slightly
different in characteristics from the 'original', but are still
fantastic hops in their own right. Many of the varieties we stock
are available only from NZ and are completely unique in their characteristics,
such as Nelson Sauvin, Pacific Gem, Southern Cross and Green Bullet.
Hop flowers can be expected to retain slightly more wort than pellets
do, but are also known for creating their own filtering bed from
the whirlpool, resulting in very clear wort running off from the
kettle.
Sometimes, we do have hop plugs available from Europe and
North America that are available as they do not face the same import
restriction as un-processed hops flowers do.
Here at Beerbelly,
we are huge fans of whole flower hops, using them for our own brews
whenever possible.
